Reviews of local government structure by the Local Government Commission will begin in Cumbria and Lancashire on 20 September, and in Hampshire on 27 September, David Curry, Local Government Minister, confirmed today.

Ministers have also agreed to the Commission's request that more time should be allowed for the final report on Derbyshire to be produced: they have allowed a seven week extension from 19 September to 7 November.

But they have asked for the report on Cleveland and Durham to be brought forward two weeks to the same date.

Mr Curry said: 'This shows that we are progressing with the review of local government structure. We have been looking at ways to improve the review process and we will make an announcement as soon as we can. The message now is that we want the Commission to press ahead with the next reviews in the programme, Cumbria and Lancashire, and Hampshire.

'We have also agreed to allow the Commission more time to weigh up the results of public consultation before completing its final report on Derbyshire. But we think that the pace of the review of Cleveland and Durham could be speeded up slightly, so we have asked for the final report two weeks earlier.'
