The National Farmer's Union is helping finance a court case against Humberside CC by Albert Hall Farms Ltd, the livestock export company which was convicted earlier this year for causing unnecessary suffering to calves, reports BBC Radio 4's Farming Today programme.

The company is attempting to overturn the council's refusal to allow live export animals to be exported from county council owned property.

Asked why the NFU was offering overt help to a company convicted of cruelty offences, NFU president Sir David Naish said the union was giving direct help through its local legal aid scheme, which was set up with members' subscriptions and run locally by members in the area who wanted to defend their legitimate claims.
