Stephen Thornton, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, is leaving the public sector to preside over public/private partnership Healthcare Medical Trust.

The trust is one of the UK's biggest healthcare grant-making charitable organisations.

Mr Thornton will take up his new post as chief executive early next year.

During his four years at the NHS Confederation, Mr Thornton helped to develop a closer working relationship with the Local Government Association over the greater integration of health and social care although there were still sharp differences between their policies.
