Education secretary Gillian Shephard today announced the appointment of Nick Tate as member of the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority (SCAA), in addition to his current responsibilities as chief executive.

'Dr Tate's commitment to a high quality of education which stretches and develops all children is appreciated by all in the education field.

'Over the next 12 months SCAA, along with the National Council for Vocational Qualifications (NCVQ), through their Joint Council, will be concentrating on taking forward many of Sir Ron Dearing's recommendations following his review of the 16-19 qualifications framework, and other curriculum related issues.'

Dr Tate's appointment concludes a number of appointments and reappointments to the membership of the authority and brings the numbers of members to the maximum of 15.

Ron Dearing, reappointed as chairman of SCAA from October; Michael Heron, appointed in January; Marilyn Frampton, appointed in March.

All appointments run to or beyond September 1997 when it is proposed that SCAA and NCVQ will merge to form a new body.
