The Highland Council has dismissed claims it wants to charge a fee for access to Ben Nevis, reports The Scotsman (p6).

Council convenor Peter Peacock said the notion was 'ludicrous' and that locals and visitors had the right to enjoy hills and mountains for free.

The idea arose in the wake of a council report suggesting the council could consider charging major charities£1 per person for use of council facilities.
