West Midlands councils have launched the first of three 'scambuster' pilots to tackle rogue traders.

Lead authority Solihull MBC will host a four-strong team, including a seconded police officer. The subsequent two pilots will cover the north east plus London and the south east.

Teams will work with police across council boundaries, pooling information to target illegal doorstep sales, counterfeiters, unqualified repairers and cowboy builders.

Trading Standards Institute chief executive Ron Gainsford said: 'The public expect trading standards services to stop these scams and bring fraudsters to task.

'With these reinforcements we can start to fight back.'
