Ivybridge town council raised the Union Jack to honour the Duchess of York's 37th birthday, but had to haul it down again after Buckingham Palace pointed out that she was no longer royal.

The Times (October 19, p6) reported that the council had had a couple of complaints about the flag flying, which prompted it to check with the palace.

Town clerk Donald Hellings told the paper: 'They told us we could fly the flag, but did not have to. We will be checking with the British Legion whether they suggest we fly the flag for the Duchess's birthday in future.'
