Eurostar's planned services north of London have been scrapped indefinitely, due to technical problems, reports the Independent (p1).

The direct services to northern cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow were to have started last summer.

Electrical difficulties, with the trains designed for the French rail system, are blamed. Eurostar ran test trains between Welwyn Garden City and Newark earlier this month but the problem remains.

A Northern business executive is quoted as being disappointed at the delay, while the article says inside sources say the promise of services to the north was to win favour for the project which could otherwise have been slated as another capital injection for the south-east.
