Labour is not embarrassed by the resignation of Mark Irvine, the head of local government for Unison in Scotland, over the private finance initiative, the party claims.

A spokeswoman said he was clearly not speaking for the majority of Unison members.

She said what mattered to the Scottish people were the eight new hospitals and 100 school developments Scottish Labour would deliver.

The SNP planned to scrap the public partnership programme and introduce a scheme 'cobbled together on the back of an envelope' which everyone else had condemned as unworkable, she said.
