East Dunbartonshire council leader Charles Kennedy has said he was surprised that the Scottish Office refused permission for a street to be named after Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Glasgow Herald (p4) reports that Mr Kennedy pointed out that there was a long tradition of naming streets after members of the royal family and other prominent people. But a Scottish office spokesman said that it was the express wish of Buckingham Palace that no street should be named after the late Princess.
