The Local Government Commission's proposals for Norfolk and Suffolk are illegal, the Home Office has revealed.

The commission proposes a unitary called Yartoft, combining Waveney, including Lowestoft in Suffolk with Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, but has got the police authority boundaries wrong. It says police boundaries should remain unchanged, so the Yarmouth part of Yartoft would be policed by the Norfolk Constabulary and the Waveney part by the Suffolk constabulary.

In a letter to both counties the Home Office says: 'The commission's proposal that the police force boundaries remain unchanged is unlawful. We have asked the DoE to ask the commission to come forward with revised proposals for the policing of Norfolk and Suffolk which are in accordance with the legislation.'

Suffolk leader Chris Mole said having two forces policing one area was ridiculous. 'Although this problem is in the north of the county it affects Suffolk as a whole because the commission has to come up with a solution which is right for the whole county.'

A commission spokesman said this was the sort of problem the consultation period was supposed to flush out.
