North Ayrshire Council is to team up with the EDI group, which specialises in economic development and investment, to form a joint venture company, reports The Herald (p9).

It is believed to be the first such partnership between the two sectors in Scotland. Now the new company will look at a long-term strategy for the three towns of Ardrosson, Saltcoats and Stevenston and will study the feasibility of attracting call centres to the area.

Council leader James Clements said: 'My council has had ambitions to improve the economic position but has been finding it difficult to make any major improvements as a result of lack of capital funding. Face with these challenges we sought partnership with private sector to bring capital and expertise together with local government.'
