The Financial Times (February 12, p4) reported that John Bridge, chairman of the north-east England regional development agency, One Northeast, will resign from a body devoted to regenerating London.

Northern MPs have expressed fury at Mr Bridge's attempt to straddle the North-South divide as a non-executive director of Greater London

Enterprises.

Mr Bridge said of his decision to resign from the London body: 'There was never a conflict of interest; indeed I believe the region has benefitted from the relationship. However the current controversy is damaging to both One Northeast and the region at large.'
