A dispute between councils over the correct spelling of a Hertfordshire village finally looks likely to be settled.

Road signs at St Ippolyts have various spellings because the county council has no firm view. The parish council, church and local school favour Ippolyts. North Herts DC prefers the spelling dating back to 1851, St Ippollitts.

North Herts has now decided to follow the local preference and adopt the parish council's spelling.

'The parish council said they wanted us to change it officially,' said Keith Hirst, head of administrative services at North Hertfordshire.

'There is a power under the Local Government Act 1972 for a district to change a parish name. We thought it would tidy things up.'
