Eight senior officers at North Lanarkshire Council are being laid off in a move by the authority to save£200,000 a year, reports The Herald (p11).

The positions to be axed include the posts of finance director, planning chief, environmental services chief, assistant chief executive (policy), and personnel services head.

Political opponents accused councillors of organising the 'purge' to deflect blame for a£7.6m loss at the direct labour organisation onto officials and said the pension pay-offs could exceed£500,000.

Council leader Jim McCabe said: 'These meaasures may not save money immediately in the first year but they will save£200,000 a year in the long term.'
