North Lanarkshire Council has appointed internally, following the retirement due to ill-health of chief executive Andrew Cowe.

The current director of housing and property, Gavin Whitefield, will replace him.

Mr Cowe took early retirement in February after being off work with angina for several months. His departure came less than two years after the council was hit by disclosures that its DLO had incurred huge losses.

Mr Whitefield has guided the council's housing service to a charter mark since his appointment as director in 1995. He previously worked at Clydesdale and Motherwell DCs.
