North Somerset Council's education director is leaving the authority to take up a post with the Audit Commission.

Jane Wreford, who has been the council's director of education since 1995, will become associate director, LEA Inspection for the Audit Commission.

Jane says her new role, based in London, will involve working with OFSTED inspecting local education authorities and bring the Audit Commission objectivity and knowledge of other areas to LEA inspection.

'I am delighted Jane has been offered this prestigious national role,' said North Somerset Council's chief executive, Paul May. 'Jane has made a very significant contribution to North Somerset Council in her time here and done an excellent job in setting up the education department - highly rated by OFSTED - from scratch.'

'Setting up North Somerset Council's education department has been a challenge but also a great pleasure and privilege,' said Jane Wreford. 'I have enjoyed working with all my colleagues in North Somerset and would like to thank them for their support.'

Before joining North Somerset Council, Jane was head of education support services at Somerset CC that she joined in 1986. Ms Wreford will not be leaving until October.
