The tribunal of inquiry into the abuse of children in care in north Wales is due to hold its first preliminary public meeting on 10 September, tribunal chairman Sir Ronald Waterhouse announced today.

The Welsh secretary will shortly appoint the other two tribunal members.

The inquiry will look into abuse of children in care in the former county council areas of Gwynedd and Clwyd since 1974. It will consider whether the agencies and authorities responsible for providing care could have prevented the abuse or detected it earlier, and how they responded to allegations when they were made.
