North Wales firefighters are a step closer to striking, with a weekend vote supporting a ballot on industrial action.

Reported in the Western Mail (p6), a union meeting voted unanimously to ballot the 458 part-time firefighters at North Wales Fire Service. A proposal for firefighters to resign en masse has been scrapped.

The FBU fears planned changes to the service's call-out and stand-by arrangements will threaten part-time jobs and the health and safety of officers.

FBU regional officer Mike Smith will call for a review of the changes at a special meeting of the North Wales Fire Authority on Thursday.

FBU representative Keith Mungnall said strikes were inevitable if the authority did not change its position.
