Members of North Yorkshire's social services committee yesterday pushed through £775,000 of cuts, reports The Yorkshire Post (p20).

The department must find savings of £1 million next year to help the council to meet a £17 million budget deficit. The new cuts package is an alternative to the highly controversial plan by the council's previous Conservative administration to close up to nine old people's homes.

£500,000 savings will be made in the department's administrative budget and £250,000 will be saved through a review of residential child care, says the paper.
