Ryedale's chief planning officer David Fisher has criticised heavy- duty security measures set up to protect shops from ram-raiding, reports The Yorkshire Post (p18)

Mr Fisher said security systems should be strengthened outside conservation areas only if the overall appearance of a building and its surroundings will not change substantially and coverings are concealed. Grilles not roller shutters should be used and detailed proposals on surface finish and colour are approved, he added.
