The North Yorks Moors Association, a leading conservation group, is recommending that a new power station be constructed in Whitby to avoid new 75ft high electrical pylons be erected on the moors, the Yorkshire Post reports (p6).

A fierce debate broke out whether the existing pylons should be replaced, power brought in from the north, or gas routed along underground pipes to a new power station.

Meanwhile, a North Yorkshire County Councillor believes that 'bitter rifts in the community' could develop as a result of alternative routes for overhead supply lines being offered.

Giles Heron said: 'Northern Electric are setting parish against parish, and residents against local authorities.'
