NORTH YORKSHIRE CC AND UNISON IN SEARCH FOR JOBS FORMULA

Unison yesterday offered to join in talks with councillors over the threatened loss of up to 600 jobs in North Yorkshire CC, the Yorkshire Post reports (p18).

The council faces a projected £17m budget deficit next year and risks having its spending capped by the government. Unison said it was prepared to discuss with management how to minimise the impact of savings on jobs and services. The union believes that an early retirement package for staff over 50 could provide a solution.

Any deficit on the council's £420m revenue budget for next year will not be known until the government announces the spending target for North Yorkshire in December, but officials estimate that it will be around £17m less than anticipated expenditure.
