North Yorkshire CC is seeking to seal a deal with a supermarket group to swap a greenfield site for a new store, parking and a new primary school, reports the Guardian (p11).

The town of Settle is due to turn out en masse tonight to decide between preserving the local playing fields or going ahead with the supermarket offer to build a new school.

Bernadette Jones, head of policy and development at North Yorkshire CC told the paper: 'We recognise that Settle needs a new primary school.

'Under government guidelines we find it very hard to get the borrowing power to make one a reality.

'This deal would be a way of providing a new school for Settle and for the future of the children there.'
