Environment secretary John Gummer has dropped a plan to rename North Yorkshire CC as the County of the North Riding of Yorkshire.

The county, from which the government plans to remove an enlarged and unitary York city council, is to keep its current name, junior local government minister Robert Jones told MPs on Tuesday.

The DoE said ministers had responded to representations from local people.
