Ten authorities - Middlesbrough BC, Hartlepool BC, Stockton-on-Tees BC, Redcar and Cleveland BC, Gateshead MBC, Sedgefield DC, Darlington BC, North and South Tyneside MBCs - are joining forces to ensure their tenants make the most of cut-price gas supplies. The Northern Echo (29 Sept, p4) reported that the councils have formed a consortium to negotiate a deal covering the thousands of people who live in council houses in the northeast region.

The councils are supporting the Northeastern Purchasing Organisation in its examination of the market for the purchase of gas for council tenants. Nepo is testing the market by issuing a no-strings-attached tender to all of the licenced suppliers on behalf of the local authorities in the area, apart from Newcastle which is carrying out its own investigations.
