School governors in Northumberland are on course to ignore government-set spending cuts and set illegal budgets, reports The Chronicle (p15).

A meeting of 47 governing bodies in Morpeth backed a call for governors at schools facing financial problems to ask Northumberland CC for approval to set budgets that overshoot expenditure guidelines. Deficit budgets are illegal.

The paper reports the council as saying it is unlikely to approve large numbers of deficit budgets, but will consider each application on its merits.
