The number of people living in poverty has nearly trebled in a decade to about 13 million, the British Association was told yesterday, the Times reports (p6).

Dr Jane Millar, a researcher at Bath University, said that 10 years ago about five million people were suffering economic hardship. She said Tory policies were partly to blame for the increase.

She said the risk of poverty was higher in the UK than in Italy, France or Germany because of labour market deregulation, cuts to social security benefits, changes to the tax system and reductions in services.
