The number of people seeking asylum in Britain has almost doubled in the past year, reports The Daily Mail (p4).

For the first time, the total number of refugees who arrived in this country seeking asylum topped 6,000 in a single month, the home office analysis for June has revealed.

The figure - 6,230 - compares with 3,575 in the same month in 1998. It was 2,650 in February last year. It means that the total number of asylum seekers arriving this year is almost certain to burst the highest of the home secretary Jack Straw's projections.
