'The message from Wandsworth is that vouchers work,' writes council leader Edward Lister in a letter to The Independent (p19).

Taking issue with reports claiming that Wandsworth were pressurising ministers to drop the nursery voucher scheme, cllr Lister says: 'There are no administrative problems that cannot be overcome.'

Some 96% of eligible Wandsworth parents have claimed their vouchers, and new nursery places are gradually being added.

On the same page, the chair of Barnet LBC's education committee Anne Jarvis, attacks the government's voucher scheme. She says the only thing preventing Barnet moving at a faster pace in its number one aim of providing more nursery places is restrictions on funding.

'If the money spent by the government on advertising and administering the voucher scheme had been allocated to councils, we could have created more places.'
