Truancy guidelines issued yesterday would undermine the partnership between parents and schools, NUT general secretary Doug McAvoy is reported in The Guardian (p4).

Schools minister Eric Forth directed schools in England to take a tougher line with parents as part of the government's drive against truancy.

Explanations such as looking after other children or shopping trips within school hours would not normally be acceptable reasons for absence.
