Commenting on today's report from Ofsted on standards in English secondary schools, Doug McAvoy, NUT general secretary, said: 'This is a high stakes inspection system which fails to support schools.

'No one condones poor standards, but soundbite reports do not address the real issues of development and encouragement to schools to improve.

'Recent press reports have also brought into question the consistency of judgments made by different inspection teams. Ofsted needs to look at both these concerns and put its own house in order if it is to have credibility with the teaching profession and with parents.'
