The government's proposals for education action zones raise issues of concern. But the fact that it plans to allow private companies to run zones introducing the profit motive into education is a far more serious development.

Such a proposal was not included in the Labour party manifesto, the White Paper nor on the face of the School Standards and Framework Bill.

The National Union of Teachers will detail how it intends to counter what amounts to privatisation of parts of the education service at a press conference tomorrow.
