The National Union of Teachers is urging parents to use their nursery vouchers in state schools, in order to safeguard standards and local authority provision for three-year-olds. the Daily Telegraph reports (p4).

The Union is making its plea in a pamphlet distributed to schools today.

The newspaper says that private nurseries, expected to thrive under the voucher scheme, are being forced to close by the force of the public sector campaign.

According to the Pre-School Learning Alliance, aggressive marketing and unofficial admissions policies - with schools taking children in earlier - have persuaded parents to remove their children from local nurseries for fear of losing school places.
