Portsmouth City Council is to bid with five other sites to provide final mooring for the redundant royal yacht Britannia, reports The Guardian (p4).

The city is competing Glasgow, Edinburgh, Greenwich, Canary Wharf and the Pool of London which have been shortlisted by the ministry of defence.

Portsmouth's o10m plan is to convert the ship into a 'tourist atraction, conference facilty and overnight accommodation'.

Council leader Leo Madden said local people had strong emotional ties with the royal yacht.
