Essex CC has participated in an online eAuction which will allow the council to purchase personal computers at a lower cost.

The eAuction, in partnership with other Essex public services and the Office of Government Commerce, enabled IT providers to bid for the contract to supply the authority's technology equipment, with a unique twist - the successful bid that wins the contract was the bid that offered the lowest price and highest quality for personal computers.

The service is expected to generate a£1.2m saving for Essex CC over the coming 18 months compared to the previous contractual prices.

Essex member for central services, Norman Hume, said: 'The scheme is an innovative way of finding the most cost efficient means of obtaining our IT equipment, meaning we have more funds to direct back into our frontline services. The savings aren't made from compromising on the quality of our equipment; they're made simply from buying better.'
