Holderness BC's plans to build a sea defence wall to save an entire village from slipping into the North Sea is being opposed on the grounds of environmental damage to birds' breeding grounds, the Sunday Times reported (7 Aug, p12).

The council is to ask other coastal authorities to help fund a public inquiry in a test of the government's sea defence strategy.

It fears that Easington, a 700-strong community already over five feet below sea level, is in danger of disappearing completely, the paper reported.
