The first Welsh school to opt for grant-maintained status is under investigation for its use of European funding, reported Wales on Sunday (p4).

Cwmcarn Grant Maintained School in the Gwent Valleys has received£52,000 for computer training courses and was to have received another£30,000 earlier this year but the European Commission is not happy with the way the programmes complied with its rules.

A Welsh Office spokesman said the office had called for more information from the commission, but it was a matter for the police and relevant authorities.

The school's head teacher Roger Woods said an independent consultant had been advising on use of the funds and grant applications, and as far as he was concerned all the rules had been complied with.

A Welsh Labour MP was quoted in Wales on Sunday as saying that 14 grant-maintained schools throughout Britain were under investigation for their use of European funding.
