Richard Ottaway, opposition spokesman on London, today condemned Labour's control freak mentality after the Greater London Labour party voted to endorse a selection procedure for their London mayoral candidate that is likely to be disadvantageous to Ken Livingstone. Mr Ottaway said:
'This is the latest in a long line of examples of Blairite control freak mentality and New Labour's refusal to give their members a say in the party's business. Ken Livingstone is an apparently popular candidate amongst ordinary members of the London Labour Party, yet Millbank Tower have ensured that the odds against him becoming their candidate are greatly increased. It is a stitch up. In stark contrast, William Hague's Conservative party will give London members the democratic right to choose.
'Labour's control freak mentality is coming home to haunt them. Their desperate attempts to stop Ken Livingstone in London, Rhodri Morgan in Wales and any European candidate they dont like show a party obsessed with control. It has so far produced condemnation in Wales and ridicule in London.'
