Oxford City Council leader Bill Baker says the authority will challenge the Local Government Commission recommendation for no change in Oxfordshire's two tier structure, reports BBC Oxford.

The city council, along with Cherwell, Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire DCs want the county council scrapped and all services run by three unitary authorities.

Mr Baker says he is writing to environment secretary John Gummer and MPs asking them to reject the commission's recommendation. Cherwell DC has indicated it will adopt similar tactics.

While Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire have not yet announced whether they will continue to fight for a unitary reorganisation, North Oxfordshire DC has said it will campaign to have the commission's recommendations implemented.
