OXFORDSHIRE INVESTIGATES LEGAL CHALLENGE OVER SPENDING ASSESSMENT

Oxfordshire CC chief executive John Harwood is consulting lawyers about the possibility of challenging the county's standard spending assessment in the courts, reports BBC Oxford.

The Labour and Liberal Democrat groups on the council want to overturn the county's spending limits which have led to a £23m shortfall for next year's budget.

Mr Harwood said reaching a compromise between the three political groups would be difficult because each had different conditions which they wanted the others to comply with.

Negotiations would be further complicated bythe decision taken at Wednesday's adjourned budget meeting that he and his officers investigate the possibility of legal action against the government over the way the standard spending assessment had been set.

'That is something obviously I have to talk to our lawyers about today and tomorrow, and it may affect the way in which the county council comes to a decision next week', added Mr Harwood.
