Oxfordshire CC's social and healthcare directorate has reached a unique deal to bail out stretched local NHS services by putting an extra £500,000 into a pooled budget for residential and nursing care.

The investment will allow five local primary care trusts to reduce their share of the £54m pooled budget this year, enabling them to tackle immediate financial difficulties. But the trusts will be required to repay the extra £500,000 by 31 March 2005.

Cornwall CC's earlier attempt to invest £8m failed when the NHS was advised they could not legally accept the money.

Oxfordshire's director for social and healthcare, Charles Waddicor, said the deal was possible because a pooled budget already existed.
