Oxfordshire CC is considering changing its policy towards the siting of mobile phone masts and advising that schools do not allow them in future.

The Oxford Mail reports that five schools in the county have signed lucrative deals with mobile phone companies to have masts on their grounds.

But the proposal to ban further masts being erected follows growing concern that children could be put at risk from microwave radiation given off by 15ft aerials.

Frank Buckingham, technical policy officer for the county council, said: 'At the end of the day it is down to the governing body of each school to make up their own minds. But we do not expect to see any governing bodies going against our advice.'

Environment spokesmen for the four political parties on the hung council are studying a report on the phone mast scare and will decide next week whether to change council policy.

Green Party councillor Craig Simmons, who has been campaigning against the masts, said: 'The county is finally taking a sensible stand and adopting a precautionary principle where the health of our children is concerned.'
