Sheffield City Council chief executive Pamela Gordon has applied to retire from the post in May of next year, after almost 40 years of local government service.

Mrs Gordon has been the council's chief officer since 1989 and is currently also president of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives.

Her decision will give the council time to appoint a successor before she leaves. The new chief executive is expected to lead a restructuring of the senior management of the council.

Discussions will begin at once about the sort of person the council will seek to fill the post, the kind of role the new chief executive will play, and the salary to be offered.

The council's policy committee is expected to approve her application when it meets next week.
