The Times (p12) reports from the Bar Conference where Laura Cox, QC, told delegates that the government's plans to introduce a European draft directive on parental leave will mean that men have a right to paternity leave.

The directive will be brought in next June. But the timing of the introduction is unclear, and the government has no plans for going beyond its minimum obligations and providing paid leave.

In effect, employees will have the right to take three months' unpaid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child.
