Before his replacement as education secretary, John Patten told the Commons that, to date, parents at 1,134 schools in England have voted for grant maintained status (OA, 12 July, col813).

This figure compares with about 350 at the time of the previous general election. Parents at nine out of 10 schools have not yet had the chance to vote in a ballot.
