The Financial Times (p8) reports that many parents choosing secondary schools for their children have not seen the government's school league tables, nor do they understand them, according to a report by the economic and social research council.

The findings, says the paper, call into question the government's strategy of attracting voters by promoting 'parent power' through publishing performance records for seven and 14 year olds.
