A primary school is taking on a new part-time teacher today using money raised by parents, reports BBC Thames Valley FM.

The school budget could not afford the cash so parents agreed to cough-up more than £4,000.

Deddington Primary School, between Oxford and Banbury, needed extra staff because the reception class now has 43 pupils.

Head teacher Peter Gorringe, explaining why the parent teachers association was approached for the money, said: 'These are very desperate times and on this occasion - very reluctantly, I have to say - the PTA felt this was the way they could best support education of all the children at the school'.

The money comes from funds the PTA was earmarking for new physical education equipment. The chairman of governors said the quality of education could have suffered without this donation.
