Parents whose children are repeatedly late for school are being taken to court by their local education authority, reported The Sunday Times (p30).

Five parents have been prosecuted by Newham LBC after their children were 'chronically' late at least three days a week for several weeks. Three were given conditional discharges and two absolute discharges.

Education secretary Estelle Morris has said she expects other councils to follow suit.
