The Education Secretary, John Patten, today announced Government action to safeguard pupils and others in outdoor activity centres.

'My colleagues and I also welcome and will be monitoring closely the work being done on a voluntary accreditation scheme for outdoor centres. That is being carried forward by the Activity Centre Accreditation Committee, which involves public and private sector organisation in the field,' said Mr Patten.

The programme includes new comprehensive and detailed guidance by DFE with the assistance of HSE, to provide information to schools and local authorities on the lessons which they should draw from the Lyme Bay incident.
